Industrial cooling towers

Evaporative cooling towers for industrial process loops. Our 150-ton, 350 GPM reference unit was developed by ValensAir and is installed and in service at a pharmaceutical plant.

Industrial cooling tower cells and fans

Heat out. Cool water back to the process.

A cooling tower rejects process heat to the atmosphere. Warm water from condensers, heat exchangers or process equipment is spread over fill media while a fan draws ambient air through it. A small fraction of the water evaporates, carrying heat away, and the cooled water collects in the basin and returns to the process.

Counterflow cooling tower, operating principle Hot water from the process is sprayed over fill media. A fan draws ambient air in through louvers at the base and up through the fill against the falling water. Heat leaves with the warm, saturated air through the fan stack, and cooled water returns from the basin to the process. Process heat load Hot water 42 °C from process Cold water 34.9 °C to process Air inlet louvers Cold water basin Fill media Water distribution Drift eliminators Fan and stack

  • Warm, saturated air out
Illustration shows a counterflow, induced-draft arrangement to explain the principle.

Operating principle

  1. Hot water is distributed

Water returning warm from the process is pumped to the top of the tower and spread evenly across the fill by a distribution header and nozzles.

  2. Air is drawn in

An induced-draft fan pulls ambient air in through the inlet louvers at the base of the tower.

  3. Heat and mass transfer in the fill

Water runs down the fill surfaces as a thin film while air rises against it. Evaporation of a small fraction of the water removes heat from the remainder.

  4. Droplets are captured

Drift eliminators above the distribution system catch entrained droplets before the warm, saturated air leaves through the fan stack.

  5. Cool water returns

Cooled water collects in the basin and is pumped back to the process to absorb heat again.

Thermal duty

Heat load, circulating flow, range and approach to wet-bulb fix the size of the tower. We size against your site climate data, not a catalogue default.

Water quality

Scaling, fouling and biological growth decide fill selection, materials and treatment provisions.

Serviceability

Fill, nozzles, eliminators and drive components are arranged so they can be inspected and replaced on site.

Applications

  • Process water cooling for production equipment
  • Condenser water for chillers and refrigeration plant
  • Heat exchanger and jacket cooling loops
  • Plastics, chemical, food and pharmaceutical utilities

Configuration options

  • Capacity and flow sized to the process heat load and site wet-bulb
  • Fill media selected for water quality and fouling tendency
  • Basin, make-up and blow-down connections to suit the plant
  • Fan and motor selection for duty, noise and energy
  • Access platforms, ladders and service openings
  • Water treatment and side-stream filtration provisions
